Life's Wallpaper: Good Reasons to Make Your Bed

Making your bed might be a small accomplishment, but it sets the tone for the entire day.

Naval Adm. William H. McRaven said in his 2014 commencement address at the University of Texas at Austin. “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right.”
You may have thought up at least one of these excuses to step away from bed-making...

  • “No one is going to see it anyway.””
  • “It’s not important.”
  • “It’s just going to get unmade again tonight.”
  • “I don’t have time.

Making your bed each morning could make you more productive. Adm. William H. McRaven has a great point, it's more difficult to fall back under the covers and procrastinate on your phone if your bed is already made. Once the sheets are smoothed down and pillows are fluffed up, you might as well start getting ready for the day.

Imagine walking into a hotel room: what is the first thing that catches your eye? It is a neatly made bed that practically begs you to slide between the soft sheets. Now imagine walking into that same hotel room, but with an unmade, messy bed. Would you still want to slide between those sheets? No way. There’s just something about a made bed that feels better at the end of a long day, partly because when a bed looks good, it also feels good and  even if you didn’t changed haven’t changed the  sheets in a couple weeks it still makes the bed look cleaner.

Making my bed was the one chore I thought that didn’t really matter, but I've learned that it's one of the best tools to tackle depression. So stop and take a couple of minutes each morning to make your bed. It just might improve your entire life!
